NHS, the National Honors Society, is an extremely honorary group to be inducted into. This opportunity is given to students with a qualifying grade point average, which is based on the student’s grades each semester. If the person has all of the requirements, they will be able to join NHS.

Ally Bonicker gives us insight on her journey to NHS and why it is so important. “NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character,” she says.  “It expands service opportunities and helps you to grow in your leadership skills.”

She states that NHS is very important “because [once] you are inducted into it, you must be an honorable person to remain there, which means making good choices and setting good examples for others. It challenges us to constantly grow to be better people for our community.”

Along with all this, colleges also look to see if the student is in NHS, and if so, the student will most likely receive a scholarship. Ally also tells us some of the pivotal requirements to be inducted into the NHS. The student must “demonstrate integrity, cooperation and sound moral and ethnic principles consistently. Students should display leadership, reliability and initiative and pursue a leadership role in school and/or the community at the time of consideration.”

Ally also shares that the student must have 50 hours or more of meaningful service to the community.

The induction of the National Honors Society was on January 5th. To learn more, contact Mrs. Sprinkle, who officiates NHS here at Maryvale.
