In the world of sports there are a lot of things that come to mind: winning, scoring, technique, agility, endurance, championships. The list goes on and on. But in the IAAM, the league Maryvale participates in, winning and technique are not the most important, character is.

In the IAAM, a coach is given two character coins.  These coins are to be given to an athlete that demonstrates good character, good spirit, integrity, and honesty during the game or match.

Good sportsmanship can be hard to find, but during this spring season, two students had the honor of receiving a character coin: juniors Jay (Kellie) Heslen and Mary Grace Marts.

For the varsity softball team, May 3rd 2017 was a big day: Senior day, last home game of regular season, a big win, and the day they clinched first place. It was also the day that catcher Jay Heslen received a character coin. After the game, Pallotti’s head coach Katie Grenchik gave Maryvale’s catcher a coin for their sportsmanship and consideration. After every at bat, Jay would hand the bats back to the girls. Their kindness paid off in the end: “I was so surprised when I got it; I was just trying to be nice.”  Shout out to Jay for being a good sport, and the softball team for going to their semi-finals!

Mary Grace Marts, #2 in varsity Badminton singles, received her coin on April 3rd. During a match against Maryvale’s biggest competitor John Carroll, Mary Grace was ahead by one point, and only needed one more to win the match. When faced with uncertainty whether the birdie was out of bounds or on the line, she asked her opponent for her view. Marts commented, “I was in a really close game with their #2, one of the best players I’ve played, I was up and it was 19-20. One shot went really far back, and it hit the line. I didn’t know so I asked her and took her word for it.”

Through honesty, Mary Grace received a character coin, and later won the game. Congrats to Mary Grace and the Badminton teams for winning championships.
