Over spring break freshman Abby Miller had the opportunity to dance in the 2017 World Irish Dancing Championships in Dublin, Ireland. With 5,000 participants and 25,000 spectators, all were anxious to find out who placed in the top 50.

This was not Abby’s first time going to the championships; she participated in the same competition in 2013 and 2015, so she knew what to expect. To prepare she practiced four times a week, each session lasting two hours in addition to practicing on her own time. With the help and guidance of her primary dance teacher, Abby was ready to head into competition. Before the championships, she qualified at regionals, placing eighth out of 164 dancers.

The competition spanned the course of a week with a different category on each day. Abby danced in the Solo Girls 14-15 category on Wednesday the 12th and had the rest of the week to watch the other dancers. At the end of the week seven judges tallied up the scores to determine who placed in the top spots. Outside of the top 50, the other groups and soloists were not told where they placed.

In her words, “I fell in love with Irish dance because of it’s unique style and rhythms. It can be graceful, yet athletic and powerful at the same time.” Although Abby didn’t make the top 50, she feels confident in her performance and will continue to persue her love of the unique style of dance.
