As the 2016-2017 school year draws to an end, say hello to a summer full of fun activities and opportunities! From concerts, to service, to book releases, Grey Towers has you covered.

Hiking

We are so lucky to live in a state with such beautiful summer weather, and if you are looking for a way to enjoy it, there are countless places and events in the Baltimore area to explore. Hiking trails are great no-pay way to get active.

  • The NCR Trail which begins in Cockeysville is a straight path, perfect for running or biking.
  • Oregon Ridge is also in Cockeysville, and has plenty of paths to explore.
  • If you are looking for a great place to take your dogs or little siblings, Robert E. Lee Park in Mount Washington is perfect; it has amazing trails, a nature center, and designated Dog Park.

Amusement Parks

Looking for something a bit more thrilling? Check out some semi-nearby amusement parks like Hershey! Hershey Park is awesome for all ages, featuring rides like the traditional Teacups and swings, but also satisfying the thrill-seeker with coasters such as Storm Runner and Fahrenheit. Hershey is also having a great deal right now, where if you buy your tickets by the end of may, they are kid’s price!

Concerts

For those music lovers out there, summer is the perfect season for concerts. In the next few months, Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland will be hosting some fantastic events such as Kerfuffle, Warped Tour, and a Jazz Festival. Check out all of Merriweather’s summer events here: http://merriweatherpostpavilion.ticketoffices.com/.

Another great music event this summer is the Hot August Music Festival at Oregon Ridge Park.

Movies

If you are more of an introvert during the summer months, have no fear! There are plenty small summer activities to get excited for, including many long-awaited book and movie releases.

Marvel’s new Spider-Man movie premiers this summer, as well as a new Pirates of the Caribbean film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 recently came out as well, and word says it’s better than the first one.

Other upcoming movie releases include the book to movie adaption Everything, Everything, as well as Snatched and a Baywatch remake starring Zach Efron.

Books

Some summer contemporary novels to check out include The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Madsen, The Inexplicable Logic of my Life by Benjamin Alire Saenz, Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, and I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios. Paula Hawkins, author of the bestseller Girl on the Train has also recently released a new thriller, Into the Water.

History and Art

Even though we are not in school over the summer, that doesn’t mean that you have to stop learning (even though it is very tempting). We are located in a city so rich with history and close to major historical areas. Baltimore itself is overflowing with historical activities and museums such as Fort McHenry and the Walters Art Museum.

We are also in close proximity to Philadelphia, which recently opened a new museum, The Museum of the American Revolution. If you are down for a road trip, try and see Williamsburg, Boston, or New York City. Some local attractions include The Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Havre De Grace, Annapolis, Deep Creek, or the Eastern Shore.

Lastly, summer is the perfect time to get those volunteer hours completed! Camp St. Vincent in Baltimore is a popular choice. To sign up or get more information about volunteering, click this link: http://www.vincentbaltimore.org/volunteer.
